Tait Dominates to Win Big Sky Heptathlon Title

PORTLAND, Ore. - After a dominating, wire-to-wire performance, Hanna Tait backed up her indoor pentathlon title by earning her second career Big Sky heptathlon crown, claiming victory over the field by 205 points.

The Grafton, New South Wales native kept her momentum from Wednesday rolling on Thursday morning, posting a facility record in the long jump with a 5.83m jump to gain nearly 800 points and extend her advantage. As the competition pivoted to the javelin, Tait led by almost 300 points, before launching a 34.43m (112'11") throw on her final attempt.

Focus then shifted to the final event, the 800, where Tait held her position in the middle of the pack over two laps, finishing in 2:32.27, good enough to collect an additional 665 points and seal the victory. With the win, Tait becomes the third Vandal to ever win the women's indoor pentathlon and the outdoor heptathlon in the same year and is the first to achieve the feat since 2010, when Ulrike Hartz won both at the WAC Championship. Tait's stay in Portland is far from over, as she will contest the 100m hurdles and long jump tomorrow.

Belén García Arias closed her final collegiate heptathlon with a strong performance on day two, setting a huge personal best in the javelin, which helped her move into 14th in the points standings. The grad student will represent Idaho in the first heat of the 400m hurdles tomorrow afternoon.
