SPOKANE - Idaho's women's soccer team possessed the ball well at times and played a good defensive game, but one lapse was the difference in a 1-0 loss at Gonzaga on Sunday.
The Idaho (5-4) offense got into the Gonzaga (5-3) zone on many occasions, but the connections just weren't there for the Vandals.
"We can't put performances out there like that," Idaho coach Pete Showler said. "It was two steps forward and one step back.
"We put a good performance in (Friday against Eastern Washington), and then there's a performance after where it's just not good enough."
Idaho was outshot by a 15-11 overall margin, while shots on goal were 7-4 in favor of the Bulldogs. GU managed eight corner kicks to just one from Idaho, but the Vandals did a good job of clearing the corners.
For the Vandal offense, the difference was finishing. In Friday's 4-1 win over Eastern Washington, Idaho connected well in front of the goal, but on Sunday, the passes seemed to go just off or were just a bit far, and the Vandals weren't able to take advantage of its chances in the zone.
"Our touch was off, our passes were short, our clearances weren't on line - we were just off today," Showler said. "We are a better team, but we've got to show it, consistently."
Freshman forward Chelsea Small led the team with four shots, two of which were on goal, while Sari Morrison and Amber Pimley attempted two each. Pimley had a rocket of a shot deflected away by GU's keeper as time expired to end Idaho's comeback hopes.
Idaho will have its first full home stand of the season next weekend, as the Vandals host South Dakota on Friday at 4 p.m., then plays Weber State at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Both games will be at Guy Wicks Field.
"We are 2-0 at home and lets' get it to 4-0, but we've got to step up and be sharp all of the time, and that's the challenge," Showler said.
