1100 athletes descend upon Kibbie Dome

MOSCOW - Senior Lucas Pope continued his trend of destroying the Idaho record book, while several other Vandals also turned in strong performances at the Runners Soul Open on Saturday at the Kibbie Dome.

Pope made it four school records in four weeks in the men's pole vault, as he soared over 5.35m (17-6.5) to win the event and move into a tie for 11th in the NCAA in the event. Since the indoor season opened four weeks ago, Pope has added nearly a foot to the previous record of 16-8.25, which had stood for 25 years.

Junior Paul Dittmer won the men's 60m hurdles in impressive fashion, as he ran the fastest time in the Western Athletic Conference to date, at 7.93. Senior Beau Whitney hit a big-time personal-best in the 35-pound weight throw and won the event with a toss of 18.80m (61-8.25). The throw is nearly one foot better than his previous long is the second-best toss in the WAC this year.

Freshman sprinter Karlene Hurrel had a strong day with career bests in both the women's 60m (7.85) and the 200m (25.42). She finished second in both events. Junior Josh Dalton also hit a career best, as he ran 49.64 and took third in the men's 400m, while junior Eugenio Mannucci won the men's shot put with a toss of 17.27m (56-8). Idaho freshman Justin Veltung won the men's long jump with a leap of 6.98m (22-11).

The meet featured more than 1100 athletes in 100 heats and it was the second day of track and field action at the Kibbie Dome.

Idaho's next action will be at Seattle, Wash. next weekend for the Husky Classic before returning home again on Feb. 19 for the Vandal Collegiate.
