Another draw for soccer

LAS VEGAS – For the first time since 2003, University of Idaho women's soccer opened a season with consecutive draws after a 1-1 tie against UC Riverside on Sunday at the UNLV Rebel Classic.

Junior forward Chelsea Small scored her 22nd career goal on an assist from fellow junior Jill Flockhart to help Idaho (0-0-2) overcome an early 1-0 deficit in the match.

After being outshot in Friday's opener by a 29-7 margin against UC Santa Barbara, the Vandals responded on Sunday with a 16-11 advantage overall and a 7-5 edge in on-target attempts. Small led all players with nine total attempts and four shots on goal.

“At the end of the day, we're still unbeaten,” Idaho head coach Pete Showler said. “At this stage, we were 0-2 last year, so that is a positive, and I know the girls will continue to improve.”

With her sixth career assist, Flockhart moves into eighth all-time at Idaho in that category. Senior goalkeeper Liz Boyden recorded four saves in the match, while sophomore forward Bailey Hewitt, who scored for Idaho in Friday's draw, had three total attempts and one on-target shot.

The Vandals held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks, while fouls were tied at eight apiece. UCR (0-1-1) got on the board first at the 26:40 mark on an unassisted goal by Kayde Hensley. Small's goal 10 minutes later at 36:08 wrapped up the match's scoring.

“Jill made a positive run inside and took two players with her,” Showler said. “She gave it off to Chelsea, and she turned and finished, and gave the keeper no chance.”

Small's shooting performance gave Idaho a school record for the second game in a row. Her nine attempts on Sunday bumped her career total to 232 and broke the previous career shots record of 223.

After one weekend of play, Showler said he likes what he sees from the team, but that he still wants to see the Vandals maintain that play from beginning to end.

“We've got a lot of depth,” Showler said. “A lot of girls got good minutes and the level of play didn't drop. We scored two very good goals this weekend and had some very good play in big parts of both games, but it's 90 minutes or 110 minutes, and it's about consistency.”

The back-to-back draws are the first for Idaho since 2006, when the Vandals posted consecutive 1-1 ties at Boise State and Louisiana Tech on Oct. 22 and 27, respectively.

Idaho makes its home debut on Friday, when the Vandals host Seattle University at Guy Wicks Field on Friday at 4 p.m. (PT).
