EUGENE, Ore. - The Idaho men's tennis team wrapped up its weekend with a 6-1 win over DePaul in Eugene, Ore., on Sunday. The Vandals improve to 3-0 on the season with the victory.
Idaho swept through doubles play with an 8-3 win from Abid Akbar and Marius Cirstea, the nation's 46th ranked doubles pairing, at No. 1, an 8-6 win from Cristobal Ramos Salazar and Jose Bendeck at No. 2 and an 8-1 win from Dmitry Perevoshchikov and Cesar Torres at No. 3.
Idaho stayed hot in singles play, winning five of the six matches to get the 6-1 victory. Akbar won a three-setter at No. 1 singles and the Vandals got straight set wins from Perevoshchikov at No. 2, Cirstea at No. 3 and Ivan Krijanto at No. 6. Torres won in three sets at No. 4 singles and Idaho's only defeat came at No. 5 where Ramos Salazar lost 6-4, 2-6, 10-8.
"This is a tough match to end the weekend and it was good to get out of here with two wins against two quality opponents," Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. "Abid had a very big win against a very strong player at number one and he also had a very strong doubles result. It's nice to see several guys stepping up their level and battling hard."
Idaho returns to action on Feb. 9 with a pair of matches in Spokane, Wash. The Vandals will take on Whitworth at 9 a.m. and Gonzaga at 2 p.m.
