LEWISTON, Idaho -- The No. 75 Idaho men's tennis team was on the wrong side of several close matches, and in turn ended up with its first Western Athletic Conference loss of the season, an 4-3 defeat to UTSA.
The Vandals got the early lead with 8-1 and 8-3 wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, but Idaho was unable to convert in singles play. Dmitry Perevoshchikov lost 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, Marius Cirstea fell 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3, Jose Bendeck lost 7-6(5), 6-4 and Cristobal Ramos Salazar lost 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5. Abid Akbar won 6-4, 7-6(10) at No. 2 and Cesar Torres won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6, but it wasn't enough.
The Vandals fall to 20-6 on the season and 4-1 in WAC play. Idaho will host Denver and CC of Spokane in Moscow to wrap up the regular season on Sunday, weather permitting. The WAC championships are April 26-28 in Denver.
