NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – The University of Idaho women's golf team opened the spring season with victory at the Delta Gamma Challenge, which was hosted by Texas State. Monday's final round at Landa Park Golf Club was shortened because of temperatures in the mid-30s with wind gusts upwards of 35mph which caused balls to oscillate on the greens and making conditions unplayable.
The Vandals were able to get in roughly five holes in the third round before play was halted. After 36 holes Idaho was tied with Arkansas-Little Rock at seven-over 575. The Vandals won the tiebreaker over UALR by virtue of Idaho's No. 5 golfer's score at the end of the second round. Leilanie Kim, coming off her 2014 WAC individual title, led Idaho with a 36-hole score of one-under 141 for a tie for fourth finish. Three other Vandals finished in the top 25 with Kristin Strankman tied for sixth at 142, Amy Hasenoehrl tied for 15th at 145 and Kaitlyn Oster tied for 24th at 147. Kendall Gray, who provided the winning round, tied for 47th.
There was a three-way tie for individual medalist with Texas State's Lora Assad, UALR's Sabrina Bonnano and Youngstown State's Aislynn Merling at two-under 140.
The Vandals will look to build off the season opening victory when they head to Kaneohe Klipper GC in Honolulu, Hawai'I, March 10-11 for the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational.
