SPOKANE, Wash. – Another spring game, another shutout. Idaho soccer made the quick trip up North on Monday, taking down the boys '02 Spokane Sounders, 1-0, on a cold night at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex.
"It was great," said head coach
Derek Pittman. "It was exactly what we were looking for coming up to Spokane to play the boys. The speed of play, their ability to close down spaces and make our players have to make quicker decisions was absolutely what we needed. I'm really proud of our players and how we defended and got out in transition to get the goal that won the game. Overall just a great contest, it was a pleasure working with Mike Pellicio and the Sounders."
The lone goal came after a turnover in the middle of the field, late in the first half.
Myah Merino broke away toward goal and slipped in a great pass behind the defense for a cutting
Summer Kaneshiro. Kaneshiro didn't need much time, and was able to get a toe on the ball to push it past the oncoming keeper for the goal.
It was another shutout performance for new goalkeeper
Makayla Presgrave. She wasn't tested often early on, but was called on a number of times in the closing minutes as the Sounders pressed for the equalizer. The Vandal defense as a whole was tremendous, limiting the opportunities for the Sounders all evening.
The Vandals will take a little time off now, ahead of a meeting with Western Washington in Spokane on April 22. Idaho will close out the spring season at home, on April 23, against North Idaho College, before taking on the alumni as part of the Vandal Athlete Reunion on April 29.
