BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Idaho women's golf shot 2-under as a team Sunday, and sits tied for fourth after the first round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
Danika Palm and
Valeria Patino led the way, each carding a 1-under 71. Palm and Patino are tied for 13th, while seniors
Sophie Hausmann and
Michelle Kim are one stroke back in a tie for 26th at even par.
"I'm extremely impressed with how we played today," said head coach
Lisa Johnson. "We got steady play all around and it's great to see some low numbers."
Palm was inserted into the Idaho lineup for the first time this season and responded with the best score of her career in the first round.
"Danika had a very solid performance in her first time in the lineup this fall," Johnson said. "We had been struggling to count four solid scores the last couple of tournaments, so we shook up qualifying before this weekend. Danika's competitive drive came out and she won qualifying. I was really excited to see that out of her. She has the physical ability to really help this team, as she showed today."
Idaho is two strokes back of a second-place tie and six strokes off the lead held by Oregon State. Six schools trailing the Vandals are within six strokes. The second round gets underway Monday, at 8 a.m. The final round will be played Tuesday.
