Another Title in Reach for Hausmann

Sophie Hausmann is in fourth place after 36 holes at The Gold Rush

02/25/2019

SEAL BEACH, Calif. – Sophie Hausmann sits in fourth place following the first two rounds of The Gold Rush Monday, at Old Ranch Country Club. Idaho women's golf is 10th after 36 holes, within 10 strokes of fifth place.

"I was very pleased with the first round," said head coach Lisa Johnson. "Our short game looked impressive given our lack of practice in that area. These greens are the most challenging part of the course and we were reading them well. We made some poor golf course management decisions because we haven't had to think about a lot of those things for a while, but that will come."

The Vandals were in fifth after a first-round 300 (12-over), but slipped after shooting a 303 (15-over) in the second round.

"The second round we definitely got tired and made some poor swings," Johnson said. "We haven't played 18 holes of real golf for a month, and this is different than working out in the gym."

Hausmann, the two-time defending individual champion at The Gold Rush, is 2-under (142) and five strokes back of the leader. The senior led the Vandals in both rounds, shooting a 1-over 73 in the morning and bouncing back with a 3-under 69 in the second round.

"Sophie's day was extremely impressive. She knows she will need a low score to get another win here, but she's capable of doing it on this golf course. If she can see some putts go down early that will be key."

Each of the past two years, Hausmann has saved her best for last at this tournament. Last season she shot a 68 in the final round to capture the title. As a sophomore in 2017, she shot a final-round 65, setting the course record and tying the school single-round mark on her way to victory.

The final round tees off Tuesday, at 8 a.m. PT. Live scoring is available HERE.
