SPOKANE, Washington—The Idaho men's tennis team (4-3), fell to Gonzaga (7-2) on the road in Spokane this afternoon.
The Vandals started the match off strong in doubles play, winning two out of the three matches, earning the point.
Althaf Dhaifullah and
Bruno Casino topped Kyle Everly and Hunter Egger in the No. 2 doubles spot for the first doubles win of the day.
Esteban Santibanez and
Francisco Bascon moved to 6-1 overall on the season with a win over Sam Feit and Matthew Hollingworth, 6-3, in the No. 1 doubles match, to clinch the doubles point.
Guilherme Scarpelli and
Vivek Ramesh were ahead 4-3 in the No. 3 doubles when the point was won for Idaho.
In singles play Gonzaga got the best of the Vandals winning the first four singles matches, clinching the match victory.
In the No. 3 spot,
Esteban Santibanez dropped the first set 6-2 before taking the second set 6-3. The No. 3 singles match went unfinished. In the No. 4 single match, Scarpelli dropped the first set 6-4, but was ahead 4-3 in the second when the match was called.
"I thought this was the first match where we played the most complete in doubles. We executed and had great energy," said Head Coach
Daniel Hangstefer. "For singles we have to figure out how to break down the opponent a little sooner. Gonzaga is a tough and well-coached team."
