Vandals In Third After Day One

HOUSTON, Texas – Idaho swim and dive sits in third place with 88 points after a solid start on day one at the Western Athletic Conference Championships on Wednesday.

The Vandals kicked off the opening day with two swimmers advancing to the 1-meter diving finals. Emily Mack filed a third-place finish in prelims followed by teammates Heather Hopkins in fourth, Hailey Faith in 15th and Allison Shimp in 16th.

Faith and Shimp would compete in consolation finals, as Shimp grabbed a fifth-place finish with a score of 228.80 while Faith posted a score of 215.65 to finish seventh.

Hopkins placed second in the 1-meter finals, posting a score of 272.80. Mack recorded a score of 231.50 to finish eighth.

Idaho swam in the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard free relay in the second session of the day. The relay team of Ani Husaby, Holly Keir, Kaling Phung and Natlie Crocker finished in sixth place in 200 medley relay, clocking in at 1:44.13. Rylie Jones, Sarah Shaffer, Alexa Teneyck and Phung came in fifth place (7:30.19) in the 800 free relay.

"Tonight was a good start to our meet," Head coach Mark Sowa said. "Our four divers were awesome. Heather performed tremendously in the finals as did Emily. Our relays had some real bright spots and some things we can iron out as we move forward. It's a long meet but we got the nerves out and we'll continue to compete like Vandals."

Idaho continues competition tomorrow morning with prelims for events in the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 3-meter diving scheduled to get underway at 8:30 a.m. PT. The finals will follow in the afternoon, starting with the 200-yard free relay at 4 p.m. PT.
