RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The University of Idaho (3-11-0, 1-5-0) could not capitalize on the momentum of its first conference win as the Vandals fell to UC Riverside (11-2-3, 1-2-3), Friday, by a score of 2-1.
Although the Vandals lost by just one goal, the game was dominated by the Highlanders, who held a 13-3 advantage in shots.
"We played hard, but we just weren't good enough," Vandal head coach Arby Busey said. "They were a better team then we were today and definitely deserved to win. We made a few mistakes in the back and weren't aggressive enough up front and that leads to being 2-1 on the wrong side of the scoreboard."
UC Riverside struck first, scoring in the 26th minute in the first half. The score remained 1-0 at halftime and the Highlanders extended their lead with another goal in the 56th minute. Idaho made an effort to get back into the game just two minutes later when Dana Elwell headed in a deflected free kick in the 58th minute. The Vandals were not able to score again, however, and lost their 11th game of the 2004 season. The win was the first conference win of the season for UC Riverside.
Idaho will now head to Fullerton, Calif., where they will take on UC Fullerton, Sunday, at 1 p.m.
