CORVALLIS, Ore. ? The Idaho women's soccer team played a solid game and took the Oregon State Beavers to the edge, but lost the game on a penalty kick in double-overtime Sunday afternoon at Corvallis, Ore.
“I was so proud of the girls. We played so well today,” Idaho head coach Pete Showler said. “We played right with them and played some good soccer.”
Anna Edmonds nailed her third goal in the last four games to put the Vandals up 1-0 late with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. Edmonds was in the right place at the right time as she put in a rebound off a Jennifer Hull shot.
“Anna gets herself into good positions to create scoring opportunities,” Showler said. “It's just grit and determination.”
Edmonds now has four goals on the year, while Hull, who leads the team with five scores, got her first career assist. Edmonds is also shooting a blazing .500 percentage, with four goals on eight shots so far this year.
The Beavers entered the game with a 6-2-1 record and had outscored its opponents 23-9 on the season with five shutouts.
With the score knotted at 1-1 and just under and minute into the second overtime period, a Vandal defender and a Beaver player got tangled up deep in the Idaho zone and OSU was awarded a penalty kick, which Jodie Taylor converted to give the Beavers the victory.
Showler was also proud with the Vandals' defensive play, as the team held a potent OSU offense in check for most of the game. The Beavers fired 22 shots, but just nine were on target.
“Our defense played really well. We were very well-organized and didn't give them any space to play,” Showler said. “Technically, we held them to one goal in open play.”
Goalkeeper Anna Sandman tallied seven saves in 100:57 in the goal. While the team switched between three different keepers throughout the 2006 season, Sandman has protected the Vandal goal for every second of Idaho's nine games this year.
Another high point of the game, according to Showler, was a contingent of Idaho fans that was nearly as big as the home team's crowd. The game's attendance was 207.
The loss drops Idaho to 4-5-0 for the season with #23 Washington State up next in a home matchup for Palouse bragging rights. The last time the Cougars came to town, WSU won a 1-0 overtime thriller in front of 1,059 fans at Guy Wicks Field.
“We played and held our own against a very strong Pac-10 team,” Showler said. “I still think we can play better than we played today and I know the girls will take a lot of confidence from this into next week.”
