FRESNO, Calif. - The University of Idaho men's tennis team managed to accomplish yet another historical feat in what has been a remarkable season. The Vandals defeated Nevada 4-2 to earn the team its first-ever win in the WAC tournament.
The fifth-seeded Vandals upset the fourth-seeded Wolfpack in the opening round of the WAC tournament. Idaho will face Hawaii, the top seed in the tournament, on Saturday in the semifinals.
"We played well today and this is a good win considering what happened in our first match against Nevada," Idaho Director of Tennis Jeff Beaman said. "The key to the match was doubles and that point ended up being the difference marker."
Idaho went down early in all three doubles matches but fought back to earn the double point. Idaho won 9-8 in two matches and the third match was stopped with scores tied at eight.
"We did not play well at the start but we came back strong to get the doubles point," Beaman said. "If we are going to do well in the tournament, doubles are going to be important for us."
Artem Kuznetsov and Alan Shin gave Idaho wins at the No. 2 and 6 spots to push the Vandals close to victory. Stanislav Glukhov's three-set, come from behind 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 over Augustin Myard clinched the historic win.
"Hawaii is going to be a tough test tomorrow as they are at the top of the conference," Beaman said. "The matchups from our last meeting are going to be the same so it is just a matter of staying focused and playing at the level we are capable of."
The Vandals fell 6-1 to Hawaii on April 25 and will be looking for revenge in game that was closer than the score appeared. Idaho faces Hawaii at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the semifinals of the WAC conference tournament.
