EUGENE, Ore. - Ulrike Hartz got a strong start in the women's heptathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday in Eugene, but a foot injury sustained in the second event of the day forced the University of Idaho junior out of the competition.
Hartz, the 2010 Western Athletic Conference heptathlon champion and WAC Women's Field Athlete of the Year, ran a season-best 13.95 in the 100m hurdles to open the seven-event competition in sixth place.
One hour later, on just her second attempt in the high jump, she injured her right foot during her approach and was unable to continue in the competition. She entered the meet with a best score of 5,601 in the event, which was the sixth-best qualifying score.
Idaho will have two of its six remaining competitors in action on Thursday when sophomores Gabby Midles and Jeremy Klas contest the women's hammer throw (3 p.m.) and men's pole vault (4 p.m.), respectively.
