VERMILLION, S.D. - The University of Idaho women's soccer team took a two-score lead early and held on for a 2-1 win over South Dakota on Saturday.
Sophomore Megan Lopez scored her third goal of the year, while freshman Christina Boddie notched her first career goal and game-winner. Sophomore Chelsea Small and freshman Nitalia Zuniga each dished an assist in the match, as well.
Small's career-high 12 shot attempts in the match are the most by a Western Athletic Conference player this season, while Idaho's 36 shots are the most by a WAC team.
"We created opportunities, but we just didn't do enough to get bodies into the box and finish our opportunities," Idaho head coach Pete Showler said. "There are a lot of things we could have done a lot better."
The win is Idaho's third straight and pushes the Vandals up to 4-2-0 on the season, while South Dakota slips to 2-4-1.
Lopez got the scoring going with a strike from Zuniga at the 26:50 mark of the first half, then Boddie added her score just before halftime at the 42:38 mark from Small.
Idaho out-shot USD by a 23-4 margin in the first half and 36-12 overall in the game. Idaho had 17 on-target shots, while South Dakota had three. The Vandals had four corner kicks, while the Coyotes had two. USD goalkeeper Jen Ogren made 15 saves, while Idaho's Liz Boyden had two.
"Their keeper was probably player of the game. She pulled off some phenomenal saves," Showler said of Ogren.
Idaho's next match will be Tuesday at Weber State, which fell to Creighton by a 1-0 score on Saturday.
