HOUSTON, Texas – The 2020 Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships came to an abrupt stop on Thursday after a water main break in Houston forced the closure of the University of Houston.
 
Due to the break, Thursday's evening session was canceled.  After a vote of the coaches, the morning's preliminary races were scored as timed finals.
 
Heather Carbon is moving on to the final in the 3-meter dive, which will take place on Friday.  She qualified third overall with 269.40 points.  Allison Shimp is also moving on in the 3-meter dive after finishing 13^th in the preliminaries with 218.95 points.
 
Katie Hale finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle.  Her time of 23.13 is a personal best, and moves her into a tie for second in program history in the event.  Rylie Jones, Natalie Crocker and Emily Deitz all planned to move on after finishing in the top-24.  Jones was 17^th with a personal-best of 23.84 seconds.  Crocker was 19^th with a PR of 23.93 seconds and Dietz finished 24^th in 24.13 seconds.
 
Brianna Lucien placed seventh in the 500-yard freestyle with a new personal-best time of 4:58.14.
 
Bindi Pedersen, Aimee Iwamoto and Kaling Phung had all qualified for the third heat of the finals in the 200-yard individual medley.  Pederson set a new season-best at 2:07.19 to finish 19^th and Iwamoto was close behind in 20^th at 2:07.32.  Phung swam the fastest time of her freshman season, 2:08.19 to finish 23^rd.
 
Campus will remain closed on Friday, forcing a shortened session of adjusted events, linked above.  The WAC will attempt to stream Friday's events, but spectators will not be allowed in the facility.
