FARMINGTON, Utah – Following a performance in which he put up 281 passing yards with three touchdowns paired with 96 rushing yards and a game-sealing 59-yard touchdown run, Idaho Vandals quarterback
Joshua Wood was named Big Sky Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week.
In Idaho's 37-30 victory over St. Thomas, Wood, a native of Graham, Wash., didn't just wow the crowd with the big numbers he put it – it was
how he put those numbers up that really impressed. One play in the first half, Wood escaped pressure in the backfield and scrambled to his left, then whipped around to his right while looking downfield, before uncorking a long pass to
Emmerson Cortez-Menjivar for a 43-yard gain.
The Vandals scored on two other long touchdown passes, one of which was a
21-yard sling to Tony Harste, the other was a
42-yard bomb down the middle of the field to an open
Ryan Jezioro.
Wood's ability to make plays in the running game couldn't be stopped, and his
59-yard scamper with about two minutes left in the game to give Idaho a 14-point advantage proved to be the game-deciding touchdown.
In Idaho's season opener at Washington State, Wood rushed for over 100 yards, making him the first Idaho quarterback to do so since 2021.
Immediately following spring ball, Wood transferred to Idaho from Fresno State to be closer to his family and have the chance to start right away. Wood started his final game at Fresno State, which was the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl against Northern Illinois. He threw for 180 yards and rushed for 32 yards. He was named the starter early on in fall camp.
Eli Gillman of Montana was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week, while Sacramento State's Koa Akui and Northern Colorado's Ezra Ekuban split the Defensive Player of the Week honors. Trajan Sinatra of Idaho State was the Special Teams Player of the Week.
The Vandals are back in action this Saturday as they host Utah Tech, the kickoff is set for 1 p.m. The game will be celebrating the 50
th Anniversary of the P1FCU Kibbie Dome. Fans can watch locally on SWX or stream the game on ESPN+.
