LONG BEACH, Calif.- Sophie Hausmann turned in a second-round 69 to climb 19 spots into second place on the leaderboard Monday at The Gold Rush in Long Beach, Calif. Hausmann sits at even-par through two rounds, leading the way for Idaho women's golf which sits in seventh in its first tournament of the spring. The Vandals are 10 shots off the lead and two shots back of a three-way tie for fourth. Hausmann is three strokes behind the individual leader, Ellen Secor of Colorado State.
"Our biggest challenge today was mentally committing to aggressive ball striking," said head coach
Lisa Johnson. "We hit a lot of greens, but didn't put it close to the pin. There were a lot of birdies out there and we only picked up 13. The greens were really fast compared to what we've been able to practice on and I think we'll have a better handle on that tomorrow."
Hausmann recovered from a first-round 75 to fire a 69 in the afternoon, one of just two sub-70 rounds recorded Monday. She also carded two of the six eagles on the day, one coming in each round. Her first eagle helped turn her day around, while the second set the tone for the second round. Hausmann was 4-over through the first 14 holes and still without a birdie. After reaching the par-5 18th green in two, she holed her 30-foot putt to get two strokes back. Hausmann recorded a par on her first three holes of the second round before an eagle on the 7th hole kick started her 3-under round, including three more birdies.
"Sophie's play in the second round was impressive," said Johnson. "She put a little too much pressure on herself early, but once she settled down we saw what she is capable of. Her two eagles both came on great fairway woods over water, into the green, followed by a long putt."Â
Freshman
Valeria Patino is tied for 15th after carding back-to-back rounds of 75. Patino was followed by
Kendall Gray (T-36),
Michelle Kim (T-47) and
Danika Palm (T-76).
"We left the golf course today thinking we left a lot of strokes out there and thinking that we can perform better tomorrow," Johnson said.
The final round begins at 7:45 a.m. PT Tuesday, from El Dorado Park Golf Course.
