Rolly Shumway holds the delightful distinction of being the first NCAA champion in Idaho history. The first of many successful Vandal pugilists, Shumway pounded his way to the 1937 NCAA crown at 145 pounds. That same season, he led to the Vandal boxers to their highest team finish at the time when he won the 145-pound title at the Pacific Coast Conference Championships and led the Vandals to a second-place finish. Shumway’s success in the ring helped kick-start a generation of Idaho greatness in boxing – a domination that lasted for the next 20 years.
