He spent over 30 years providing service before self-treatment to the thousands of student-athletes over those years at U of I. Barrie served the athletic healthcare needs of thousands of students, and impacted countless athletic training students and professionals as a leader and mentor. Barrie's impact within the athletic training profession extended far beyond the UI, serving as the Director of the Northwest Athletic Training Association (NWATA) where he was responsible for expanding scholarship opportunities for students, incorporating the NWATA and initiating legal action to protect the profession of athletic training. In addition to his leadership and advocacy at the regional level. Barrie served on the National Athletic Training Associations (NATA) Board of Directors, and held numerous involvement positions at the national level, including spots on the Finance Committee, Investment Committee, CUATC and the Secretary/Treasurers Committee. His vast accomplishments over the years did not go unnoticed by his peers having been elected to both the NATA and NWATA Hall of Fame.
